In this paper, we have shown the importance of the role of the Iranian Supreme Leader as the most powerful person in Iran. This helped us understand how he controls all political decisions, including in regard to the nuclear program. The following section explained the personal background of Khamenei from his childhood in a theological school to his election as Supreme Leader. Knowing that he has been a fundamentalist since his early years and has had to face the weakness of his country during the Iran-Irak war is key to understand the last section concerning the nuclear issue. In this part we analyzed what is the position of the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei concerning the Iranian nuclear program. We demonstrated how he uses his infinite power to develop this program, even when he disagreed with the president elected. Khamenei uses his untouchable status to take all the decisions he wants concerning the nuclear program of his country. His long-term objective is to make Iran a powerful country, that is respected and independent from foreign influence, especially its proclaimed enemy, the U.S.
As the war in Ukraine and the declarations made by Vladimir Putin showed, nuclear weapons are still a sword of Damocles above our heads. Since we have witnessed the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, people fear it could happen again. The willingness of prohibiting nuclear weapons to spread is therefore understandable. However, the argument made by opposing parties criticizing Iran is weakened by the fact that they themselves own nuclear weapons.
